Florida Retirement Communities Sandhill Cranes

Florida Retirement Communities Love the Sandhill Cranes

Why feeding them is so harmful
Anyone living at Lake Ashton or who has visited Florida retirement communities has seen the Sandhill Cranes in its entire splendor. Although there are many birds that call Lake Ashton home, none stands out like the Sandhill Crane. The have a very distinct call and are very large, but like all wild birds and or animals you should not feed them.

In a recent meeting with Dr. Tom Schotman, MS, DVM at Lake Wales Veterinary Hospital, he shared enlightening information as to why it is imperative people stop feeding Sandhill Cranes. Sandhill Cranes have an abundance of natural foods, bugs, grubs, insects, and even small animals. They do not need handouts! We put them in harm ways if we attract these birds to our yards with feed or seed of any kind. Cranes can become dependent on humans and ultimately stop seeking their natural diet, thus endangering their health even further.

It is critical to the health of Sandhill Cranes that their diet have on protein and balanced levels of calcium and phosphorous. This is particularly important for the growth and development of their unborn offspring, as well as new chicks. If this balance is missing, or if their diet is supplemented with carbohydrates, the risk to these birds is nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism, more commonly known as osteodystrophy or rickets. Growth plates in the legs become inflamed, curvature of bones can occur, and natural development is thwarted. Ever notice a Crane limping or one with bowed or splayed leg? They have rickets caused from a poor diet, most likely what humans fed them. While carbohydrates are horrible for them, even seeds do not provide the balance diet they require, and are detrimental as well. Only nature can give them what they need.

When you’re looking at Florida retirement communities, Lake Ashton has so much to offer including plenty of nature. Lake Ashton is set on over 1,200 acres with two 18-championship golf courses, a 26,000 sq. ft. Clubhouse with Movie Theater, ballroom, bowling alley and so much more. A new 30,000 sq. ft. Health & Fitness center is open with everything for your health including an indoor swimming pool.
Florida retirement communities has so much to offer the active adult looking for and exciting fun filled lifestyle and Lake Ashton is the Florida retirement community that makes all other Florida retirement communities pale in comparison.

A special thanks to Patty Wallner a Lake Ashton resident who wrote most of this blog regarding Sandhill Cranes.

Florida Retirement Communities Lake Ashton

Live Green and $ave Green at Lake Ashton

By Marialice Quinn

How would you like to $ave money every month on your utility bill AND be perfectly comfortable in your brand new home?
Lake Ashton's Environments for Living(R) program makes that possible.
"Being better stewards of our planet is an important role for each of us," says Jon Lawson, Director of Marketing, "and Lake Ashton's 'Environments for Living' program goes a long way in fulfilling this role without a premium price tag. We have made a community-wide commitment not only in the homes we build but also in the operations and maintenance of Lake Ashton."
Lake Ashton's state-of-the-art homes are designed to save the earth's resources, create better air quality, and save you money. The Environments for Living(R) program meets specific building standards, resulting in homes that are more comfortable, durable, healthy, safe, and energy- and water-efficient than conventionally built homes. "The Environments for Living(R) program, exclusively available at Lake Ashton and certified through an independent third party organization, is a national turn-key green building solution unlike any other because it is a comprehensive green program," says Lawson.

Energy Star Rated
Energy prices are a major concern for consumers. Homebuyers will be glad to know that Lake Ashton's Environments For Living(R) homes qualify for the widely recognized ENERGY STAR(R) label, the gold standard for energy-saving features that typically make products 20 percent to 30 percent more efficient than those in conventionally built homes - and making for surprising savings when you get your electric bill. ENERGY STAR products can save families about a third on their energy bill with similar savings of greenhouse gas emissions.
"We also offer each new homeowner the Environments For Living(R) program's limited guarantee on energy used for heating and cooling the home," says Lawson, "reassuring our homeowners that the promise of energy efficiency is backed by tangible assurances."

Advanced Comfort
Using advanced techniques of building science, the Environments For Living(R) program found only at Lake Ashton helps enhance the comfort of your new home." Our brand new green homes offer advanced comfort features which means your rooms are evenly cooled and heated," says Lawson. "Your new home will come with the Environments For Living(R) program's comfort guarantee, promising that the temperature at the location of the thermostat will not vary more than three degrees from the center of any conditioned room for that zone."

Indoor Air Quality
Lake Ashton's new green homes have fresh air ventilation systems that deliver filtered fresh air that helps reduce dust, odors and indoor contaminants for improved indoor air quality.
Healthier air is also achieved through carpet and carpet padding. Paint products used in Lake Ashton's homes give off only low volatile organic compounds (VOC), reducing indoor pollutants. Microwaves are vented to the outside, eliminating smoke and odors within the home, and air conditioning has electronically monitored fresh air ventilation.

Advanced Durability
A home's durability is an important feature for homebuyers, and a challenging one, as water and moisture are the biggest factors that adversely affect building materials. The Environments For Living(R) program includes multiple moisture management features that enhance a home's durability.
"Every possible area is targeted," says Lawson, "down to the paint - 21st-century, high-tech, insulating paints improve utility bills, and actually increase the durability of regular house paint."

A Lifestyle of Your Dreams
Savor new friendships while honing your tennis skills or just enjoy the fresh breeze of an autumn night. Swim every day of the year, meet your neighbors over a delicious lunch in the restaurant or join your friends for a drink in the lounge after a challenging round of golf. This is your dream. Why not live it to the fullest? Why not live in an active retirement living community? "Calling Lake Ashton an active adult community is an understatement," says Lawson.

Don't miss out on the great savings and exciting new "Certified Green" homes during our Sizzling Summer Sale. Read what George and Connie have to say about their experience at Lake Ashton and why they now call Lake Ashton HOME! Visit our web site to view all the new "Certified Green" homes and see the active adult lifestyle.
"We talked to Ruth, our Lake Ashton Community representative, for over a year. When we received the invitation to visit during the Sizzling Summer Sale, we decided to schedule the 3-day 2-night stay.
Our personal representative, Karen, was so helpful and nice. In less than an hour we had fallen in love with the active lifestyle, amenities and attractive community. The new model center features well built "certified green homes" with many energy saving features. So of course, we just had to take advantage of the huge savings they are offering during their Sizzling Summer Sale.
We feel comfortable knowing we have made a great decision and also received an outstanding value. The fact that Lake Ashton has a sister community with a Continuing Care Campus gave us added peace of mind for later years. We can’t wait to move into our new "green" home and begin living our retirement dream."

Florida Retirement Communities Nature Notes

By Alan Delorey
Spring is an exciting time for bird watching! A flock of 40 Bobolinks worked the grasslands on the western side of Lake Ashton. This is an uncommon species to see in this area as they migrate north to nest in hay fields. The Least Bitterns were heard calling from the marsh by the boat dock where they were first found nesting two years ago. A migrating Virginia Rail was also heard in the same location. A brown Pelican was seen soaring over Lake Ashton, and although a year-round resident in Florida, the Brown Pelican usually stays near the coast and is a rarity this far inland. A Swallow-Tailed Kite flew along the edge of Lake Ashton, only the second time this species has been reported in Lake Ashton. At the same time the Kite was seen, an adult Bald Eagle soared in lazy circles over the lake.
When your looking for Florida retirement communities remember Lake Ashton has it all. And now is a great time to visit and enjoy all that Lake Ashton has to offer including the spectacular nature setting.

Florida Retirement Communities Health and Wellness Update

By Abby Renardson

In general, Americans are generous people. This seems to be especially true of Lake Ashton residents. Unfortunately, many people make the mistake of sacrificing their own well being while taking care of others. If you've ever been on an airplane, and actually listened to the safety information, then you have heard the flight attendants instruct parents to apply the oxygen mask to themselves before assisting their children. There's a very good reason for this. If you can't breath, then you won't be able to help anyone else.

That basic premise applies throughout our lives. Many of us are so busy taking care of others that we do not make taking care of ourselves a top priority. And when we feel the results, so do all the others that have been in out care. So it is important to free your mind from its training, and rethink what it means to at least make yourself as important as everything else you are taking care of.

Prioritizing your own well being requires attention to both the physical and mental aspects of your life. Good fitness and nutrition are essential to having a healthy body. Planning is key to making sure you are able to put in the time required. Adequate sleep is something most Americans find elusive. Exactly why we sleep and what happens in the body during sleep is not understood, but the need for it is inescapable. Good habits such as not eating or exercising late, getting into bed only when you are ready to sleep, and having a comfortable environment are some things that will promote good sleep. Friends and family that provide support and emotional connection, as well as having fulfilling activities are important for one's mental health. Equally so, removing those people and activities that are draining or unfulfilling can be a huge relief and free you to focus on things and people that are good for you.

In the end, putting yourself first allows you to give more to others. You've heard "do unto others as you'd like others to do unto you." Now consider doing unto yourself as you're always doing unto others. This is part of being well!
