Lake Ashton's "Going Green" Tips of the Month
Light bulbs: The new CFL, energy saving light bulbs, unlike the old incandescents, cannot be recyled because they contain a small amount of mercury. When those CFL bulbs are dead, just bring them to a Home Depot Customer Service desk or IKEA to make sure they are taken care of properly. Good News- GE now sells a CFL bulb that looks like the old regular bulbs. It's called Energy Smart.
Reach for Reusable: One microfiber cloth can take the place of 60 rolls of paper towels before it needs to be replacing and is gentle enough to use on most surfaces, including glass. Keep a few on hand to wipe counters, dust furniture, mirrors and clean anything glass. They can be machined washed, however, use of fabric softener is not recommended, and it's best to line-dry. They are very inexpensive to buy at most discount and dollar stores and flea markets.
